Action research represents an approach to collaborative knowledge creation, empowerment and social betterment. It is a disciplined process of scientific inquiry that emphasizes collective reflection, active participation and creative actions by and for the people who are committed to improving their own lives and the lives of their fellow human beings. Action research generates empirical and translational knowledge that can be applied in the real world for addressing the many challenges of contemporary society. This approach forges partnership and alliance with community stakeholders to explore and develop solutions to local problems, such as those concerning the promotion of holistic health and mental wellness, the enhancement of care and support for people facing illness and loss, the elimination of stigma and discrimination, as well as the eradication of oppression and social inequality.
