Call for participation

A special session will be held as part of the VSMM 2016 International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia, at Sunway University, in Kuala Lumpur, October 17-21. This session will be organised by DIHA (Digital Intangible Heritage in Asia) in collaboration with NODEM (Nordic Digital Excellence in Museums) and the Centre for Research-Creation in Digital Media (CRCDM). This call, invites submissions of abstracts for presentations, papers, posters and demonstrations at the exhibition of the conference.

The aim of this special IVIAH session, is to provide a platform for culture heritage researchers, museum curators, digital media specialists, linguists, designers and others in these related industries to present the challenges in their respective fields with a view to promote opportunities for interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial collaboration aligning with the VSMM 2016 theme: “transdisciplinary, transmedia, transformations”. We believe that collaboration at this level will spark major breakthroughs in highlighting awareness of intangible heritage in Asia.

Abstracts of original ideas, work or research are invited on all aspects from the following sub-fields including, but not limited to:

  • cultural research and inquiries in intangible heritage
  • environmental and ecological issues and intangible heritage
  • the role of language and cultural knowledge repositories in the conservation of intangible heritage
  • curating intangible heritage in museums
  • interface and design of digital media for the exhibition of intangible heritage
  • meaning-making and the interpretation of intangible heritage exhibitions
  • visual media and memory and intangible heritage
  • innovative ways of accessing intangible heritage resources

Submissions are welcome from researchers, developers, curators and exhibition designers. Please submit your abstract (500 words) using EasyChair by 15 of June.

 

Participants will be notified about the status of their submission by 15 July 2016.

The participants of this special session will also be able to attend the entire program of VSMM 2016 in Kuala Lumpur.

The publisher of the proceedings as per previous VSMM conferences is IEEE.  The papers submitted to VSMM 2016  will be double peer-reviewed by an international academic committee and published as an IEEE Conference Proceedings,  It will be available on IEEE Xplore. The papers will be indexed according to the IEEE process. Please note, only those papers presented as part of the VSMM 2016, Kuala Lumpur will be published in the conference proceedings.

DIHA (Digital Intangible Heritage in Asia), founded in 2009, is the first interdisciplinary research cluster on intangible heritage involving several researchers across schools and colleges at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) as well as external partners. DIHA captures the vibrant cultural and linguistic fusion of the Asia Pacific region through interdisciplinary lenses.
