Plastic bags are widely used in Singapore – in supermarkets, convenience stores, departmental stores, food stalls and neighbourhood provision stores. The consumer can get a free bag almost any where, with almost any physical product purchased.

Plastic bag consumption and production is a serious problem in Singapore. In 2011, approximately 3 billion plastic bags were used in Singapore, which results in an average of 1.6 plastic bags used per person on a daily basis! (Shah, 2013).

Plastic disposable cutlery, such as plastic plates, bowls, cups, and utensils, are also used widely in Singapore for its convenience. Due to the busy lifestyles of Singaporeans, many people buy food in take-away containers to eat on-the-go or at their workplaces, schools, homes, or other places. Furthermore, in house parties and gatherings, people often buy disposable cutlery for the convenience of not having to wash up, and probably also because disposable cutlery costs very little money.

Single-use disposable plastics may seem pretty minute and insignificant. However, they actually have shockingly damaging impacts on the environment.
