Beyond Today

The loss of marine populations and diversity is real; you could check this with anyone who has been scuba diving for the past 5 years.

When I first dived in Dayang Island, Malaysia, people told me that it used to be an incredible site with flourishing corals, fish of all sorts and sizes, plenty sea turtles and occasionally a whale shark. I saw bleached corals, small fishes (barely a school!), few big fish, one turtle and one moray eel. We had to explore areas further off the coast for more variety.

At present, humans are the cause of the 6th extinction wave, the previous of which were all caused by geological change. Scientists estimate that the extinction rate lies between 0.01 to 0.1% of all species each year. Many species have yet to be discovered so at the extreme end, this could mean an extinction of up to 100,000 species.

“Conservation is a science whose principles are written in the oldest code in the world, the laws of nature. The natural resources of our vast continent are not inexhaustible. But if we will use our riches wisely, if we will protect our wildlife and preserve our lakes and streams, these things will last us for generations to come.”

-Walt Disney

How will this generation shape our Earth for the next generation to exist?
