Sewage & Sludge

Sewage, otherwise generally known as liquid waste, is defined as the untreated municipal liquid waste requiring treatment in sewage treatment plants. It consists of 99.9% water, with the remaining content being either organic or inorganic waste. At the household level waste water is generated in:

  • toilets,
  • kitchens,
  • bathrooms,
  • laundry

Sludge, or sewage sludge, is the semi-liquid, semi-solid precipitation produced by the wastewater treatment plants. Sludge can also be produced by untreated sewage disposed off into lakes and other water bodies such as rivers and ponds. Sewage sludge generation is increasing at an unprecedented rate as even more sewage treatment plants are being developed to cope with the population’s need for wastewater treatment. Sludge and effluents from these sewage treatment plants are frequently disposed off the agricultural land either for irrigation or manure usage.
