Other Conservation Efforts

Along with the Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, Steve also spearheaded many other conservation initiatives.

The zoo, in cooperation with International Croc Rescue, continues to be at the forefront of the rescuing and relocating “problem crocodiles”. ICR was set up by Bob and Lyn Irwin to protect saltwater crocodiles, which were being hunted almost to extinction. Steve, Terri and his good friend Wes led a highly trained capture team of over a hundred strong to help capture and relocate as well as educate the public about crocodiles.

The zoo’s state-of-the-art Australian Wildlife Hospital, inspired by Lyn Irwin and completed in 2008, takes in dozens of patients a day and offers daily public tours.

Conservation programs and projects devoted to koalas, tigers, elephants, cheetahs are also going strong.

Steve also designed and funded the construction of a boat dedicated to crocodile rescue and research.  Called “Croc One“, the purpose built expedition and research vessel is involved in world-first crocodile research and marine wildlife rescue. Steve’s passion is to protect all species of crocodilian.

Croc One gives you a glimpse into the crocodile’s secretive world.  Vital information is collected on the movements of wild populations of crocodiles. This is essential to promote a better understanding of these ecologically important animals, and their continued conservation in the wild.
