In meeting the needs of a growing population, the Singapore government has to develop its infrastructure, such as building more housing units, improving the efficiency of its transportation system and increasing the number of facilities and amenities. All these development plans will result in a strain in the physical environment of Singapore as limited land is being maximized to meet the needs of the population as well as that of the country.

Environmental problems or environmental degradation are ultimately a consequence of human activities that consume the natural resources. A larger human population means that there will be greater human activities and consumption of natural resources, hence leaving a bigger impact on the Singapore environment. However, environmental issues are social issues too as environmental problems will ultimately affect the well-being of everyone on the planet. Many existing research has shown that natural environment has played an important role in the identity development in both children and adult.

In this section, we will look at how the Singapore government’s plans to meet the needs of the projected 6.9 million population has an impact on the Singapore environment and on Singaporeans.
