Environmental education programmes serve to create awareness and give people information about environmental issues – its causes, consequences and solutions to alleviate the environmental problems. It also attempts to change people’s attitudes and behaviors towards environmental issues by promoting pro-social environmental behaviors in them. When people become aware of how their actions to the environment can eventually leave negative impacts on their own life, they would be more motivated to change their behaviors. As such, it is also important that people are educated on the ways that they could adopt to change their behavior towards the environment.

Environmental education can be implemented across mutiple levels, ranging from government and all the way down to family.

  • Governmentsgcampaign
    – Carry out more public campaigns to educate Singaporeans on environmental issues and ways that could be adopted by them to engage in pro-social environmental behaviors (e.g. waste management and using energy-efficient appliances)
    – Make use of media (e.g. television, newspapers, posters) and the internet to advertise the campaigns because the more people are exposed to the campaigns, the more they are influenced to adopt the behavioral change
-Support governmental and/or non-governmental organizations that give talks on environmental education               Photo Credit:

  • Schools
    – Include environmental education as part of the education curriculum in order to cultivate love for nature since young
    – Bring students out for trips that allow them to experience direct interaction with the environment, hence allowing them to develop care for the environment
  • Family
    – Educate children on the importance of caring for the environment by encouraging them to adopt environmentally-friendly behaviors since young (e.g. do not waste water and switch off fans and lights when not in use)
    – Bring children out to parks and zoos to allow them to develop love and care for the environment
