Future Directions

One solution that will have the most effect will be government intervention in the form of policies that crack down heavily on illegal logging, logging and palm oil companies who waste empty spaces after clearing the forests. Learning from history, lax enforcement was one of the key reasons why orangutans are still endangered today. If the government is able to take orangutan conservation seriously, it is likely that the situation will improve drastically.

To overcome structural barriers such as lack of jobs and bad economy, the government has to help create jobs and make the change easier for people living in these communities. Eliminating illegal logging from the country is not enough, jobs will need to be created for these people or else the demand for jobs through an illegal outlet will always be there.

Population monitoring is important as well, as only by understanding the current situation, will environmentalists be able to create programs that has the highest effectiveness.
