Government Intervention

“Environmental Police Department  (EPD) to enforce environmental Laws?”

There are many laws/regulations in place now to remove or prevent spreading of invasive species. As this is viewed as a major environmental issue, most Governments around the world have set up certain laws or regulations to contain or prevent any damage done from invasive species.

Looking Specifically at the Singapore context, there are many government agencies that use laws and legislation to protect the environment. Below is some informtion adapted from Nparks, showing the different laws in place, what they mean, and what is the agency enforcing it:

Animals and Birds Act (AVA): Regulates the import, export, and transshipment of animals.

Controls of Plants Act (AVA): Regulates import and export of plants and plant products

Endangered species(Import and Export) Act (AVA): Regulates trade in endangered species of plants and plant products

Parks and Trees Act (Nparks): Regulates the planting, maintenance and conservation of trees and plants within national parks, nature reserves, tree conservation areas, heritage road, green buffers and other specified areas. The Act also specifies that release of animal is prohibited in the nature reserve.

Prevention of pollution of the Sea Act (MPA): Regulates the prevention of sea pollution, whether originating from land or from ships (with reference to ballast water).

All these acts are the government agencies effort to contain the damage done by exotic species.

Also, the government and other large environmental organisations aim to educate everyone about the severity of exotic species in Singapore, which brings us to our next point.
