SunBear Distribution & Status_0

Source: REACT

In recent decades, the Sun Bear population has been slowly depleting in numbers from their habitat. Despite the lack of reliable estimates of the number of sun bears left today, the rapid declination of forests and an active trade of the bears and their parts are strong evidences of a falling trend in their population. In the last 30 years, it’s population is statistically thought to have dropped by more than 30%, hence it is currently being labelled as a vulnerable species on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List today. This vulnerable status makes them one of the most neglected large mammal species in Southeast Asia and the least known bear species in the world.

Reproduction wise, the sun bears are able to reproduce year-round and breed various times within a year, and this is due to the fact that the Sun bears do not hibernate like other species of bears do. Mating period usually lasts anywhere between 2 to 7 days. Gestation period is usually about 95 days but it can last as long as 240 days (possibly due to delayed implantation). The number of cubs born to the mother is usually 1, but sometimes 2 cubs are born.
