Goodall wrote multiple books and memoirs of her research and observations, including In the Shadow of Man in 1971, and Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating in 2005. In the Shadow of Man was Goodall’s first major text, and garnered a lot of attention for the vivid descriptions of the primates and their way of life.

Goodall currently advocates for chimpanzees and the environment, and is a board member for the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary outside of Africa, called Save the Chimps. Goodall was also the former president of Advocates for Animals, an organization based in Scotland that is against animal medical research and testing, and the captivity of animals in zoos, farms, and for sport. However in 2008, Goodall controversially called Edinburgh Zoo a “wonderful facility”, which went against the beliefs of the organization. Thus, in June 2008, she resigned her presidency.

Jane Goodall advocates the vegetarian diet for more than health reasons. In one of her books, The Inner World of Farm Animals, Goodall wrote “(animals) are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined…they deserve our respect. And our help.” To add on to that, in 2011, Goodall became a patron of Voiceless, an Australian animal protection institute. Voiceless is against factory farming, due to its environmental impact as well as the cruelty to the poor animals.
