  1. National Parks Board (Nparks)

When Parks and Recreation Department was first set up in 1975, the purpose was for them to consult on the development so that green planning is not just on ad-hoc basis but as future planning. The efforts were heavily emphasized as seen from their expenditure increased from $6m in 1973 to $63m in 1985.  It was then renamed to National Parks Board

According to NParks, they feel that their role is to conserve, create sustain and enhance green space in Singapore to strive towards Singapore as a City in a Garden. Many of the parks managed by Nparks consist of rich biodiversity and they aim to use parks to strike a balance between urban lifestyle. CUGE

The Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE) is established from Nparks and Singapore Workforce Development Agency. It aims to impart skills and expertise on advancement of urban and green living environment. It facilitates training for workers so that they can aid in the advancement of greenery and ecology in urban landscapes.

  1. Ministry of National Development

According to Ministry National Development, “We (They) guide Singapore’s land use planning, urban redevelopment and building conservation, deliver affordable and quality public housing, develop an efficient construction industry to ensure a safe, quality and sustainable built environment, provide and manage parks, open spaces and the conservation of nature areas, maintain a high standard of primary food safety and animal and plant health, as well as protect consumer interest by raising the professionalism in the real estate agent industry.” In order to achieve that, innovative urban park designs are included in land use planning so as to include green spaces in Singapore for sustainable practices. Urban Redevelopment Authority has a very important role to play in the development of such conservation movements.It is Singapore’s land use planning and conservation authority. Our mission is to make Singapore a great city to live, work and play. Some of their works include “Planning for Long Term Sustainability”, “Guiding and Shaping Design Plans to Create a City with a Distinctive Identity” and “Making our Public Spaces a Fun Place to Live, Work and Play”. The most important relevant one will be “Guiding and Shaping Design Plans to Create a City with a Distinctive Identity” and “Planning for Long Term Sustainability” as both of these works can explain the uprise of urban parks.
