Legislations, Campaign and Programs involved

At first, there were almost little to none consideration given to the planning of open space provision. However, throughout the years, not only have we given some consideration to green spaces and parks, we have even included them as one of the important aspect of industrial planning and physical development. Below are some of the movements that have aid in promoting such acts.

Past

  1. Tree Planting Campaign

Tree Planting Campaign was the first movement in 1963 since the then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, envisioned Singapore as a Garden City.

2. Jurong Town Corporations (Parks) Regulations (1988)

First few sets of regulations  enforced to protect parks and animals within the area of the park.

3.. Parks and Tree Act (1990)

“An Act to provide for the planting, maintenance and conservation of trees and plants within national parks, nature reserves, tree conservation areas, heritage road green buffers and other specifiedareas, and for matters connected therewith”

4. Green and Blue Plan

This plan was first implemented to build more green and open spaces for leisure and recreation.

  2. Multi-lateral environmental agreements (CBD, CITIES, UNFCC)
  3. Park Connectors Network (PCN)
  4. The Heritage Tree Scheme (2001)
  5. City in a Garden (2011)

Launched in 22 August 2011, CIAG sets six aims on urban parks, urban biodiversity and better gardens which explain the presence of uprising innovative urban parks. Coupled with the aim of developing Singapore into a city laid within a garden, NParks aim to also educate the public about natural heritage and responsible conservation. To achieve that, NParks proposed a few ways such as bringing parks and greenery to people, proactive tree management, building up PCN, revitalizing Singapore Botanic Gardens, conserving natural heritage, building community ownership and cultivating Gardens by the Bay.
