Innovative eco-structures

There are some innovative eco-structures in Southern Ridges like Alexandra Arch. One of which is an award-winning eco-architecture along Southern Ridges is the Henderson Waves.

  1. Henderson Waves

Having won Design of the Year in 2009, the Henderson Waves is a connecting walkway between Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park at 36 metres, thus being the tallest highest pedestrian bridge. It is conceptualized based on parametric design and its three-dimensional surface-form takes the structure and form of a wave. Under the curves of the waves are seating areas for people to rest. The part which I like and admire most is the choice of the materials that the architect chose. It is made up of organic materials like timber and steel which is a sensitive mix and thus, complementing the natural settings. As stated in the Design of the Year 2009 report, the Henderson Waves consists of “the complex engineering means of 274-metre horizontal seamless steel”. It is also coupled with the organic form of seven “waves”, with the central “wave” being 57m long. Aesthetically, the bridge also has orange LED lights in the steel which lights up at night. The usage of Yellow Balau timber (imported from Malaysia) in the deck of the bridge also shows an ingenious architecture. It also a good place for visitors to view migratory birds-of-prey.

  1. Alexandra Arch

Alexandra Arch is a 80m long bridge that links Forest Walk and Floral Walk. The appearance of this arch is like an opened leaf with a curved that deck. It has LED lights that changes colour in the colour spectrum of dusk to complement the nature setting of the nature walks and parks.
