6 years after their involvement in Mongolia, the Snow Leopard Trust started working in India where Snow Leopards can be commonly found in the northern Himalayan Mountain range. Their partnership with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) resulted in the support of 8 full-time and 2 part-time staff positions responsible to expand conservation efforts in India. India is home to an estimated number of 2 to 600 snow leopards in an area of 75,000 km2.

Threats to Snow Leopards in this region include:

  • Reduction of natural prey
  • Retaliatory killings
  • War and military activities

Conservation Programs:

  • Livestock Insurance
  • Research Camera Programs
  • Conservation Education Programs: Eco camps are very successful in India which has encouraged the Snow Leopard Trust to introduce it to Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. Similarly, Nature clubs have also been able to cater to more than 150 teachers and children in schools covering more than 10,000km2 of the leopard’s habitat area.
