Singapore Zoo

The Singapore zoo was officially open by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense then, Mr Goh Keng Swee on 27 June 1973. It is managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore which also manages the Night Safari, River Safari and Jurong Bird Park. Over the years, the Zoo won many local and international awards and is one of Singapore’s hottest attraction to both tourists and locals, receiving over 1.7 million visitors yearly. It covers 28 hectares and is located at the Upper Seletar Reservoir within Singapore’s heavily forested central catchment area. The Zoo adopts an “open zoo” concept and is home to more than 2,800 animals of 300 species. The animals are allowed to freely roam around in their enclosures that are specially designed to resemble their natural habitat instead of placing them in cages.

Besides providing a place for people get in touch with nature and spend quality time with loved ones, the zoo also aims to educate the public about wildlife and promoting conservation friendly attitude in them. The Zoo also strongly stands by its goals of Wildlife Conservation and Preservation of Biodiversity through various measures.

“Wildlife conservation and the preservation of biodiversity are goals we have made ours – to take with us as we create a world where more will be inspired to learn, appreciate and respect the animals, with whom we share our planet.” – Singapore Zoo
