Plastic in Singapore

The Singaporean government is aware of the fact that Singapore is a high consumer of plastics.  According to the National Environment Agency (NEA) in Singapore, plastic is the fourth highest waste product that Singapore has to get rid off,  but the least recycled one. This implies that Singapore should have a lot of plastic, among between other waste products.

That seems to be problem. The government is aware of this problem. They gave some tips on how to reduce the amount of plastic people use.

  • People can use reusable or recyclable bags, which are for example made of cotton.
  • People can reuse the plastic bags they already have at home
  • They have introduced and are supportive of the “Bring your own bag” campaign.

Singapore also has a Bring Your Own Bag Day (BYOBD). This was introduced in April 2007 when NEA and the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) jointly launched a programme to cut down the amount of plastic bags. In the beginning every first Wednesday of the month was a BYOBD, but because it was such a success, since June 2008 every Wednesday is a BYOBD.
