“Its Not My Problem”

One of the barriers in encouraging individuals to step up to address the threats faced by banded leaf monkeys is the diffusion of responsibility – tendency for each individual to assume someone else have already done it or will take the responsibility to do it.

Indeed, the presence of groups can inhibit individual helping action. Banded leaf monkeys conservation campaigns may appear to individuals that help has been received to save and protect these endangered banded leaf monkeys. It is also human nature to assume that:

“someone else has already done something to help protect the banded leaf monkeys”

But Is That True?

For many years, banded leaf monkeys have received scant attention from the public due the limited studies and research done on this species. To ensure long-term persistence of banded leaf monkeys requires a collective effort from every individual. The only way to increase conservation efforts to help this species is to raise the public awareness and actions individuals can take to combat these issues.

In order to protect these threatened species, more individual voices need to be heard for stakeholders to realise the urgency of this problem. As the saying goes, nothing is ever enough when it comes to conservation efforts. Being aware of this principle could help individuals counteract the negative effects of these social tendencies that will take over their decision making process and increase their shared possibility towards protecting the banded leaf monkeys.
