The reference lists in scholarly literature can tell us a lot about a piece of work. By exploring these citations we can discover related works, seminal research, and the origins of ideas. Citation databases available through the Library can help us to search for publications that cite or are cited by known works.

Through interaction and hands-on exercises led by librarians, participants will learn to:

  • understand the purpose of references, particularly in scholarly works.
  • understand how citation databases work.
  • use citation databases like Scopus and Web of Science to identify highly cited works and related works.
