Journals

All students of English literature will need to search for journal articles during the course of their studies. Journal articles provide a critical commentary on literary texts and are a forum for the scholarly exchange of ideas. Reading the journal articles will provide you with valuable insights into the thinking of world-renowned academics in your field of research. Being relatively short, journal articles also provide a useful introduction to critical ideas.

How to search for journals

1. Using NTU Library Subscribed E-journals A-to-Z list

If you have a specific journal in mind, always try to find the electronic copy in the NTU Library Subscribed E-journals A-to-Z list first. There are four key tabs for searching or browsing the A-to-Z list:

ejournals clip

  1. Browse the index of e-journal providers (example: JSTOR Language & Literature Collection)
  2. Browse by title of journal (example: Comparative Literature)
  3. Browse by subjects (i.e. by discipline; for literature it is ‘language and literature’)
  4. Search for titles either by Title Name, Publisher Name, ISSN, Subjects or all of the above

The search result will present the databases that the journal can be found in and the period covered.

Search example:
For example a search for the journal title Comparative Literature yields the following results:

The results above show that Comparative Literature is available in four subscribed databases (Academic Search Premier, JSTOR (2 databases) and Literature Online). Click on any of the links to access the journal.

Important Note: An embargo of one year means that the last one year of journal articles will not be available for viewing yet. In the above example, Academic Search Premier has an embargo of one year for Comparative Literature. Search the library catalogue for a print edition, if no edition is available; contact our library staff who can help to arrange document delivery for specific articles.

2. Using Library Catalogue to search for print editions

The HSS library has a selection of journals available in print format. These journals are located on a display shelf on your right as you enter the HSS Library. You can search for print journals by keying in the journal title in the library catalogue.

Important Note: The library catalogue only allows for searches by journal title and not by the title of individual articles. If you want to search using the article title, use the databases instead. Do ask for the help of a librarian if you are unable to locate an article.

How to search for journal articles

If you do not have a specific journal in mind and would like to search on a specific subject or topic, use the databases instead. View the list of recommended databases for English literature.

For example if you are studying the nineteenth century author Wilkie Collins, you could search for articles about him and his works from the literature database Literature Online. Once inside the database key in ‘Wilkie Collins’ and a list of journal articles will appear under the title ‘criticism’.
