Many traditional forms of Asia are most eloquently seen in the everyday pots used in different countries. Refined over thousands of years, journeying through material and functional evolutions, the everyday pot of Asia is simultaneously practical and common, philosophical and symbolic.
The lota and the kalash of India, the chanoyu tea kettles of Japan, Chinese ceramic pots of everyday use – all are objects of deep beauty: both outer and inner. Ceremonial, functional, sculptural, festive, sublime, mystical, symbolic: the everyday pot is a container of potential and possibilities – an envelope for fluidity.
This exhibition of selected pots from India, Singapore, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Philippines, and Malaysia, will give the local and international design community a direct experience of the rich formal traditions of Asia.
This exhibition is jointly curated by Prof. Kirti Trivedi (of IDC, India) and Prof. Suresh Sethi (of ADM, NTU).

Art Events, Exhibitions, News - ADM Library
Join us for this informal sharing session as three of the volunteers involved in Project UnLibrary share their insights and perspectives about the design thinking behind the installation designs.
This sharing session is held in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition of the UnLibrary installations at the Art, Design & Media Library and is jointly organised by NTU Library and the National Library Board.
About the speakers:
Ms Cheong Yian Ling graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Industrial Design from NUS in 2008 and was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal for being the top graduate. During the course of her studies, Yian Ling has received recognition in various competitions, including the Lite-On Award 2009, Core77 Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008, OSIM-NUS ‘Imagine Healthy Living 2010-2015’ and DELL-NUS ‘Integrating IT into Future Retail Spaces’. Upon graduation, she joined DIC as a design researcher, actively looking for new tools to facilitate all creative processes and design workshops in the centre.
Mr Qiu Wenhao graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney in 2006 and worked with DP Architects upon graduation. Wenhao is currently with the National Parks Board promoting Skyrise Greenery in Singapore. His loyalty remains with architecture and believes that the creative processes of practicing architecture can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.
Mr Alvin Liau graduated with a Master of Architecture from NUS in 2007 and worked with Teh Joo Heng Architects for 2 years. Currently he is an architect associate with Surbana International Consultants.

Art Events, Exhibitions, News - ADM Library
Project UnLibrary is a social experiment to “ prototype a participatory ‘library within a library’ ”. The idea behind this project sees a group of outsiders who are non-librarians, ‘take(ing) over’ a space within a library (‘library-hacking’), and redesigning it towards an end-goal in mind. The design process is meant to be participatory and evolutionary in nature, and was initially envisioned by a team of design volunteers led by Alvin Tan (founder and Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage). The installations throughout ADM Library are conceptual in nature and they are by and large inspired by the theatre.
Come to ADM Library and experience this participatory exhibition on design and theatre! Leave a favorite quote on one of the “quote trees” or express how you feel in a “Big Book” or simply take a breather and sit on one of the “white cubes” place all around the library overlooking the ADM water fountains.
There will be a talk by the team of design volunteers on the 14th of September. More details coming your way.
The exhibition ends on the 18th of September 2009.

Today was the first day of the convocation ceremony for NTU graduating students. Amongst them are the first batch of graduating students from the School of Art Design and Media. I would like to congratulate the 1st graduating batch from SADM. They have reached the end of a journey, and going to start a new journey in the industry where they will apply what they have learnt in the last 4 years. We have seen the success of the recent Art Festivals and with the growing interest in Art , the graduating students will play an important role in this industry. Singapore has also made a mark as a Design hub in the region, and these students will surely bring Singapore to the global arena. There are many new development and opportunuties in the media industry and with various government funding and the industry support, I believed that many of them will make a name in this creative industry. Good luck to the 1st batch of graduating ADM students!

Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art, Design and Media cordially invites you to join us at a special lecture on Tibetan Thangka painting on 16 July 2009. Presented by recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Professor Richard Ernst, “Arts and Sciences – A personal perspective of Tibetan painting” will reveal the close links which bridge art and science, technology and culture.

Image from: http://www.thangkapaintings.info/thanka/chenrezig-thangka-painting/
Professor Ernst discovered the beauty of Tibetan painting by accident, in 1968. Reflecting his longstanding interest in Thangka painting, he will share his unique insights and his personal fascination with these scroll paintings, revealing another cultural world. This visual journey will express religious beliefs, philosophical principles, and historical facts. In his lecture, Professor Ernst will also cover the numerous scientific aspects that are involved in the study, conservation and restoration of the delicate Thangka paintings.
Details of the talk
Date: Thursday, 16 July 2009
Time: 4.15 pm – 6.00 pm
Venue: Auditorium, School of Art, Design and Media, NTU
