Crowbar Awards 2009

The Crowbar Awards 2009

The dust has settled for Crowbar Awards 2009 on 28 August 2009. The winners have cheered and celebrated their wins.

The Crowbar Awards highlights the best emerging talent in creative communications and design in this region. There are 6 categories – advertising, design, interactive, photography, film and the Crowbar Challenge. The results were announced and awards presented on 28 August 2009.

NTU came in 3rd in the Top 10 school ranking after Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LASALLE College of the Arts. One NTU entry also bagged the Best of Advertising category.

The effect and celebration live on through the roving exhibition of the winning entries. From 11 November 2009 to 2 December 2009, a selection of the winning entries is on exhibition at the Asian Communication Resource Centre.

The librarians have also compiled a list of books on advertising. Most of these books are on display now and a pdf copy can be found at the ACRC blog.

Biggest-Ever Bauhaus Exhibition in Berlin

The Members of the Bauhaus

BERLIN — It wasn’t a happy ending. Once celebrated as Europe’s leading art and design school, by early 1933 the Bauhaus was reduced to camping in a hastily converted telephone factory on the outskirts of Berlin and subsisting on handouts from its director, the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Denouncing it as “un-German,” the newly elected Nazi government forced the school to close.

Designing an ‘UnLibrary’: Insights & Perspectives

UnLibrary-blog-mini_v2

Join us for this informal sharing session as three of the volunteers involved in Project UnLibrary share their insights and perspectives about the design thinking behind the installation designs.

This sharing session is held in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition of the UnLibrary installations at the Art, Design & Media Library and is jointly organised by NTU Library and the National Library Board.

About the speakers:

Ms Cheong Yian Ling graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Industrial Design from NUS in 2008 and was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal for being the top graduate. During the course of her studies, Yian Ling has received recognition in various competitions, including the Lite-On Award 2009, Core77 Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008, OSIM-NUS ‘Imagine Healthy Living 2010-2015’ and DELL-NUS ‘Integrating IT into Future Retail Spaces’. Upon graduation, she joined DIC as a design researcher, actively looking for new tools to facilitate all creative processes and design workshops in the centre.

Mr Qiu Wenhao graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney in 2006 and worked with DP Architects upon graduation.  Wenhao is currently with the National Parks Board promoting Skyrise Greenery in Singapore. His loyalty remains with architecture and believes that the creative processes of practicing architecture can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.

Mr Alvin Liau graduated with a Master of Architecture from NUS in 2007 and worked with Teh Joo Heng Architects for 2 years. Currently he is an architect associate with Surbana International Consultants.

Unlibrary Exhibition

Project UnLibrary is a social experiment to “ prototype a participatory ‘library within a library’ ”.   The idea behind this project sees a group of outsiders who are non-librarians, ‘take(ing) over’ a space within a library (‘library-hacking’), and redesigning it towards an end-goal in mind.   The design process is meant to be participatory and evolutionary in nature, and was initially envisioned by a team of design volunteers led by Alvin Tan (founder and Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage).   The installations throughout ADM Library are conceptual in nature and they are by and large inspired by the theatre.

Come to ADM Library and experience this participatory exhibition on design and theatre!   Leave a favorite quote on one of the “quote trees” or express how you feel in a “Big Book” or simply take a breather and sit on one of the “white cubes” place all around the library overlooking the ADM water fountains.

There will be a talk by the team of design volunteers on the 14th of September. More details coming your way.

The exhibition ends on the 18th of September 2009.

This course provides students with design skills for physical publications such as books, magazines , brochures, catalogues, magazines, newspapers and annual reports among others while engaging in diverse phases of conceptualization, layout and printing of a unique or a series of formats.

It also addresses editorial design as a strategy that deals with multiple levels of information within and across a single or several editions.

The exhibits featuring brochures, newspapers and magazines, will be on display till the end of next week.

Hanoi ve dem

Saw these photographs on ADM Library’s green wall and wondering what it is about?!

ngo-gachgia-ngu

It is a photographic exhibition displaying works by Shannon Castleman, Assistant Professor of Photography & Digital Imaging from Art, Design & Media School. The works portrayed Vietnam’s transformation and how Hanoi’s social structures and its spaces coincide.

Here’s a write-up about the exhibits:-

“Hanoi v? ?êm is a product of Castleman’s desire to bear witness to the profound transformation the city continues to undergo following the turbulence of Vietnam’s twentieth-century history. The capital’s spaces and its traditional social structures coexist, sometimes uneasily, with the signs of greater economic prosperity and an increasing consumer culture.

Part of a wider exploration of the fate of mobile businesses in South-East Asia, these photographs explore the flip-side of Hanoi as a site of frenetic commercial activity and throw into relief the vestiges of its Colonial structures. The images reveal the process of the city’s nightly hibernation as the people, vehicles, and goods, which populate every inch of its streets during the business day, begin recede in the late evening.  Pavements are washed, left abandoned and unfamiliar, and the city itself appears as a deserted stage on which urban debris forms still-lifes testifying to the day’s earlier performances.

The images were all shot between 12:00am and 4:00am, on 4×5 films with exposures ranging from 15 to 30 minutes.

1.    4:00am, Duong Thanh Str.
2.    1:00am, Gia Ngu Str.
3.    12:10am,  Ton Duc Thang Str.
4.    2:30 am, Ngo Gach Str.
5.    1:05am,  Dinh Liet Str.
6.    2:45 am, Lac Long Quan Str.

The exhibition is now on! So come down to ADM Library’s White Area to see view these amazing works!

bw-exhibition

unsung_heroes

Drop by ADM Library to view the black & white photography exhibition set up by the NTU Photo-Videographic Society.

The Exhibition is aimed at paying tribute to the non-teaching staff of NTU by documenting them at their workplace. A simple series of environmental portraits aimed at getting the student population of NTU to be familiar with the “heroes” who make life easier for us, for instance cleaners who help to keep the campus clean or security personnel who ensures that the campus is a safe place, etc.

It also aims to promote the traditional black and white photography as an art form.

The exhibition will run till 14th March 2009 in the Art, Design & Media Library.
