The login method remains unchanged for NIE staff and students, SIMTech staff, Associate Members as well as users who are issued with a barcoded library card.

This change will affect NTU staff and students for the following services:

  • review my account (exclude renew option)
  • renew my materials
  • change my library password
  • place hold

Staff & Students who have forgotten their network account passwords will need to contact CITS using one of the following methods:

  • Email helpdesk@ntu.edu.sg
  • Call 6790-4357 or 6790-5228 and press “9″ to speak to CITS Service Desk staff (manned daily from 7am to 11pm, Singapore Time: GMT+08:00)
  • Visit the CITS reset password detailed page.

Parliament has passed the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Amendment Bill (Bill No. 3/2012) on 9 March 2012. First introduced in Parliament on 14 Feb 2012, the bill, commonly known as the “Lemon Law”, will give more protection to consumers by allowing them to get retailers to replace or repair defective goods (or “lemons”), or even to ask for a refund or discount.

How the term “Lemon Law” came about
In the US, defective cars are known as “lemons” and the “Lemon Law” protects the rights of car buyers. While it’s not clear the origins of this term, two earlier usage were in:

1) a Volkswagen print ad featuring a defective Beetle and calling it a lemon, designed by ad agency DDB Germany in 1959 (image of ad below and more details from the DDB website); and

2) an article in the Quarterly Journal of Economics by George Akerlof in 1970, titled The Market for ‘Lemons’: Quality Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism.

Singapore’s Lemon Law
Back to the new bill which is set to take effect on 1 September 2012, consumers, under the new Lemon Law, can request retailers to replace or repair defective goods within a 6-month time frame. While the law excludes consumables with a short life span like food stuff, it will, however, include pets.

‘At the end of the day, what the law seeks to do is not to remove all lemons… but to encourage transparency and good business practices.’ – Minister of State (Trade and Industry) Teo Ser Luck (Straits Times, 10 March 2012)
