The Early Chinese Newspapers of Singapore (1881-1912)

Meiyu February 3rd, 2009

LHZB (1 Feb 09, Pg 9) carried a detailed report on the Chinese edition of the late Madam Chen Menghe’s book, The Early Chinese Newspapers of Singapore (1881-1912), which was launched in December 2008 – some 40 years after it was first published in English. Madam Chen, a renowned scholar, was a key management executive of the Shanghai Book Company.  Her book traces the social functions of Chinese newspapers in Singapore in the 19th century, using the methodology of case analysis and comparative research in its in-depth exploration of the various establishments. The translator of the book, Dr Hu Xingrong, Head of the department of humanities and social science at Malaysia’s Southern College (Kolej Selatan) and visiting professor at Taiwan’s Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages, has retained the unique character of the original English version while improving it through further research.  The report noted that NTU’s Division of Chinese recently received a generous gift of $1 million from the Shanghai Book Co to create an endowment fund that supports the pursuit of Chinese at NTU.  The article mentioned that Madam Chen’s brother – Shanghai Book Co consultant Mr Chen Mong Tse – is a Nantah alumnus.
