Selected New Title for Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

bk Title: Molecular chemistry of sol-gel derived nanomaterials
Author: Corriu, Robert
Call number: TA418.9.N35C825
Availability: Click here

Synopsis:
From its inception, the sol-gel process has been invaluable for incorporating organic, inorganic, polymeric and biological entities into an inorganic matrix due to its use of much lower temperatures than traditional thermodynamic preparations. Until recently, most hybrid materials were formed from silica but new advances should allow the use of alternate oxides. For instance, titanium oxide could exhibit photovoltaic properties, iron oxides could induce magnetism and some others such as tin oxide could afford semiconducting properties. By exhibiting specific properties, these potential hybrids can be employed for precise applications and could substantially expand the field of inorganic synthesis. This book stresses the role molecular chemistry can play in this burgeoning field and focuses on nano-objects and nanostructured materials that can be created from this process and their possible applications, including biomedical (controlled drug release) and optical (macroscopic fiber) usage as well as solar energy applications. It provides a comprehensive overview of the sol-gel process with particular emphasis on the application of molecular chemistry methodology in the field of material science.
