Title of Talk: Designing an ‘UnLibrary’: Insights & Perspectives
Date: Monday, 14th September 2009
Time: 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Venue: Art, Design & Media Library (Easy Sitting Area @ AV Section)
Nanyang Technological University
Registration: Closed
Project UnLibrary was a social experiment to prototype a participatory ‘library within a library’. This would involve a group of outsiders who were non-librarians, who would ‘take over’ a space within a public library (‘library-hacking’), and redesign it towards an end-goal in mind.
Join us for this informal sharing session as three of the volunteers involved in Project UnLibrary share their insights and perspectives about the design thinking behind the installation designs.
This sharing session is held in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition of the UnLibrary installations at the Art, Design & Media Library and is jointly organised by NTU Library and the National Library Board.
About the speakers:
Ms Cheong Yian Ling graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Industrial Design from NUS in 2008 and was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal for being the top graduate. During the course of her studies, Yian Ling has received recognition in various competitions, including the Lite-On Award 2009, Core77 Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008, OSIM-NUS ‘Imagine Healthy Living 2010-2015’ and DELL-NUS ‘Integrating IT into Future Retail Spaces’. Upon graduation, she joined DIC as a design researcher, actively looking for new tools to facilitate all creative processes and design workshops in the centre.
Mr Qiu Wenhao graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney in 2006 and worked with DP Architects upon graduation. Wenhao is currently with the National Parks Board promoting Skyrise Greenery in Singapore. His loyalty remains with architecture and believes that the creative processes of practicing architecture can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.
Mr Alvin Liau graduated with a Master of Architecture from NUS in 2007 and worked with Teh Joo Heng Architects for 2 years. Currently he is an architect associate with Surbana International Consultants.

This exhibition is jointly organised by the Chinese Heritage Centre and Huayinet and showcases 50 (A2 size) photographs. Feel free to drop by Lee Wee Nam Library to have a look at these photographs.
Title: Environmental Technology Exhibition
Date: 17 to 31 August 09
Venue: Business Library
As the ideas of global warming and climate change progressively attracts global attention nowadays, sustainable development and green lifestyle has grown to be a worldwide project far beyond the territories of Singapore.
The emerging economics growth in Singapore and China has led to the increase in greenhouse gasses emission. There is a need to accelerate the sustainable development in order to reduce the impact on the environment. Many Singaporeans take for granted the clean and hygienic environment of Singapore. However, in many rural countries, people are still lacking of basic water and sanitation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to raise environmental awareness especially among the youths in Singapore.
The Environmental Technology Exhibition aims to inspire future generation to be passionate about environmental development and to provide a basic knowledge and understanding for students about the current and latest green technology as well as the basic technologies for water and sanitation.
The Environmental Technology Exhibition is divided into 4 main themes:
Energy Conservation – This part of the exhibition demonstrates some types of the renewable sources of energy in the market, from solar energy to biofuels.
Water Management – Water management based on Singapore’s experiences are illustrated here, such as Marina Barrage and NEWater.
Solid Waste Management – In dealing with solid waste, Singapore has its way of clearing the waste. However, recycling is a foremost importance that is encouraged and monitored over the years.
Green Lifestyle – Besides technology, the most important thing about doing a part for the environment is the role that we all play in our daily lives. Here, we look at the various efforts that NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) in Singapore has done, as well as what we could do ourselves.
Title: Unlibrary Exhibition
Date: 11 Aug to 18 Sep 09
Venue: Art, Design & Media Library
Project UnLibrary is a social experiment to “ prototype a participatory ‘library within a library’ ”. The idea behind this project sees a group of outsiders who are non-librarians, ‘take(ing) over’ a space within a library (‘library-hacking’), and redesigning it towards an end-goal in mind. The design process is meant to be participatory and evolutionary in nature, and was initially envisioned by a team of design volunteers led by Alvin Tan (founder and Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage). The installations throughout ADM Library are conceptual in nature and they are by and large inspired by the theatre.
Come to ADM Library and experience this participatory exhibition on design and theatre! Leave a favorite quote on one of the “quote trees” or express how you feel in a “Big Book” or simply take a breather and sit on one of the “white cubes” place all around the library overlooking the ADM water fountains.
