Starting on your research? Which journals to look at in your area of research?
Posted by: Li Keng in E-Resource Tips, Search Tips, tags: PhysicsAre you starting on your research? Your FYP? And you are wondering which are the journals that you should be looking at in your area of research? You may want to look at the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for the journals with higher impact factor. The journal impact factor is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year (see JCR HELP page).
JCR (click to access JCR, Subscribed by NTU Library) comes in two editions, Science Edition and Social Sciences Edition. JCR allows you to view a group of journals by subject categories. At the front page of JCR (see diagram below), you can select which editions (depending on your area of research) and which JCR year to use. After selecting the JCR edition and year, you can then check the option ‘View a group of journals by Subject Category’ and click on the SUBMIT button.

You can select the ’subject category’ to view the journals under each subject (see diagram below). In addition, you can also choose to sort the journals by ‘Impact Factor’ to see the journals with higher impact factor at the top of the list of journals in your selected ’subject category’. Click ‘Subject Category Scope Notes’ for more details on the subject categories in JCR.
