Year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.

Many countries in the world are celebrating the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009). IYA2009 is to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope to study the night sky (ref http://www.astronomy2009.co.uk). 

“The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme The Universe, Yours to Discover.” (ref http://www.iau.org/public_press/iya/).
