MathGV is a mathematical function graphing software program for Windows XP, 2003 and Vista. It can plot 2 dimensional, parametric, polar, and 3 dimension functions.

The software interface is dialogue driven and allows changes to any setting at any time with immediate results. This instant visual feedback makes mathematical functions much easier to understand.

The software can be downloaded via the MathGV website.

The NTU Library has recently subscribed and implemented the bX Recommender Service on our ezSearch system. It is part of our effort to make the system more beneficial to our users and to encourage sharing of useful references found in our subscribed resources with NTU peers or colleagues in the same area of research.

The bX Recommender is a new service that taps into the power of the networked scholarly community to generate recommendations based on article usage.

For example, on Amazon, users can view recommendations for books and other items sold on the site. Similarly, the bX Recommender Service provides recommendations for scholarly journal articles.

The steps to access the bX Recommender Service are as follows:
1. Login to ezSearch at http://ezsearch.ntu.edu.sg.
2. Do a QuickSearch by entering your search terms.
3. Click on the SFX icon besides an article that you are interested in the list of search results returned.
4. If there are recommendations for that article, you would be able to view them.

Gnuplot is a portable command-line driven interactive data and function plotting utility for UNIX, IBM OS/2, MS Windows, DOS, Macintosh, VMS, Atari and many other platforms.

It was originally intended as to allow scientists and students to visualize mathematical functions and data but has grown to support many other uses such as web scripting and integration. Gnuplot supports many types of plots in either 2D and 3D. It can draw using lines, points, boxes, contours, vector fields, surfaces and various associated text.

The software can be downloaded via the Gnuplot website.

Applied Mathematics Optimization

(Source: Springer)

The Applied Mathematics and Optimization journal presents papers that embrace a wide diversity of applied areas, such as physical, chemical, biochemical, environmental topics, and optimum design, as well as stochastic finance.

It includes the theories for solving problems, in addition to deterministic and stochastic optimization: partial differential equations dealing with applied problems, such as turbulence, homogenization, and stochastic differential equations occurring in filtering theory and in biology. The journal also features critical surveys of new advances in theory and application.

NTU staff and students can click here to access this journal online.

(Source: News at Princeton, accessed on 7 September 2009)

Princeton researchers have beaten the present world record for packing the most tetrahedra into a volume.

In the cover story of the 13 August 2009 issue of Nature, Salvatore Torquato, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials, and Yang Jiao, a graduate student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, report that they have bested the world record, set last year by Elizabeth Chen, a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

Finding the best way to pack the greatest quantity of a specifically shaped object into a confined space may sound simple, yet it consistently has led to deep mathematical concepts and practical applications, such as improved computer security codes.

NTU staff and students can click here to read the full text of published article in Nature.

Source: Abel Prize Website

The Abel Prize, the math field’s counterpart to the Nobel, is an international prize presented annually by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians.

The Russian-French mathematician Mikhail Gromov was announced the winner of the Abel Prize 2009 by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for his “revolutionary contributions to geometry.”

Mikhail Gromov has led some of the most important developments, producing profoundly original general ideas which have resulted in new perspectives on geometry and other areas of mathematics. For more information about the laureate, his achievements and the Abel Prize, please visit the Abel Prize website.
