News & info related to processes of sharing & publishing of research findings among academics & researchers

Oct 19 to 24 is Open Access Week. Open Access is a movement within the global research community to make published work freely available, immediately after publication. The Budapest Open Access Initiative, introduced in 2002, articulated the philosophy behind it. Open access quickly took root in the scientific and medical communities because it offered an alternative route to research literature that was frequently closed off behind costly subscription barriers.

You may also take part in the initiative by depositing your published work with DR-NTU. DR-NTU comprises two Digital Repositories: DR-NTU (Open Access) and DR-NTU (Restricted Access). DR-NTU (Open access) focuses primarily on collecting conference papers and journal articles by NTU faculty & researchers for which publishers permit self archiving in open access repositories. DR-NTU (Restricted access) comprise student submissions such as theses, work attachment reports and final year project reports that require user authentication to access the full text.

MIT’s faculty have approved a resolution that allows MIT to distribute their research papers via the institution’s online repository.

The open access resolution hopes to address two problems with publishing in scientific journals:
1. faculty members are forced to give up rights to their own articles
2. publishers charge exorbitant subscription fees to MIT for access to these articles.

DR-NTU (Open access) is our institutional repository that collects conference papers and journal articles by NTU faculty & researchers for which publishers permit self archiving in open access repositories.

The advantages of an institutional repository include:

  1. IT IS A PERMANENT ARCHIVE
Preserves intellectual output of the university; provides easy storage & retrieval.
  2. IT SHOWCASES UNIVERSITY RESEARCH OUTPUT
Raises visibility/prestige of university staff and increases impact of faculty research.
  3. IT SUPPORTS SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION EFFORT
Provides easy & free access to scholarly output funded by public & the university and increases circulation of research materials.

You can find out more information about DR_NTU (including FAQ & Procedures). If you are keen to submit your publications, you may want to contact the respective science librarians.
