Jay Mantri Photo Archive

Inspired by Unsplash, designer Jay Mantri provides photographs for others to “make magic”. According to the blog, seven photos will be added every Thursday.

Developed by German web developers, Pexels provided handpicked stock photos from free image sources, such as Unsplash and Gratisography. To date, there are over 3,000 images that are on Creative Commons zero (CC0) license. Users can search or browse the images.

Tret’yakov Gallery Collections

The Tret’yakov Gallery (or the State Tretyakov Gallery) houses a comprehensive collection of Russian fine art from the 12th century onwards. Their digital collection allows user to search or browse more than 2,000 artworks by categories, periods and artists.

StockSnap.io

StockSnap contains curated images by Marc Chouinard and Christopher Gimmer. The images are from around the web and photographers from their network. Users can search or browse by date, trending, number of views, number of downloads and number of favourites.

Israel Museum Collections

Founded in 1965, the Israel Museum is “the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel”. They houses encyclopaedic collections, ranging from pre-history to the present day in archaelogy, fine arts and Jewish art. Their digital image database, IMAGINE, allows users to search and browse the collections by exhibitions, collections or departments.

Life of Pix

Life of Pix offers high-resolution photographs with no copyright restrictions. The photographs were contributed by Montreal-based Leeroy Advertising Agency and its network of photographers. To date, the site contains close to 600 images. Life of Pix also has a sister site, Life of Vids, that provides access to public domain videos.

Viintage Graphics

Viintage Graphics is a “public domain image repository” that focuses on the term “vintage”. Through their website, users can browse the images by collections.

Pattern Library

The Pattern Library is an ongoing project that compiles patterns by designers. The site is developed by Tim Holman and Claudio Guglieri.

Walker Collections

Since its founding in 1940, the Walker Art Center has collected the visual, performing, and media arts of our time. Their digital collection contains more than 4,000 images. Users can search or browse by period and type. Walker Art Center also has a Living Collection Catalogue that is an online serial dedicated to scholarly research of their multidisciplinary collections. The catalogue contains media-rich essays on broader themes as well as in-depth investigations of specific works of art.

National Geographic Wallpapers

The National Geographic Society is one of the largest scientific institutions in the world, focusing on geography, archaeology, natural science, conversation and the study of world culture and history. They offer stunning photographs, which can be a good source of images in these areas for educational and personal purposes.

Hermitage Museum Collection Online

Based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the State Hermitage Museum is one of the world’s largest and oldest museums. From Paleolithic to contemporary, the museum has more than 3 million items in its holding. The museum also has the world’s largest collection of paintings, which includes famous paintings from the great masters, such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, etc.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts collection

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is continually making their collections accessible online. To date, their collections span from paintings, prints, drawings, photography to more specific works like African art, Asian art, decorative arts and new media.

Van Gogh Museum collections

The Van Gogh Museum is an art museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh. It contains the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world. The digital collection contains more than 830 works by Vincent and his contemporaries. The digital images of the works can be downloaded for non-commercial purposes in high-resolution, which are an average of 6,000 x 6,000 pixels. The collection can be searched or filtered by artist, location, year, type and genre.

MorgueFile

Developed by Michael Connors in 1996, MorgueFile is an online community for photographers and remains as a popular image source for creatives. It is currently managed together by Michael and his brother, Kevin Connors, and Johannes Seemann. This platform contains photographs “freely contributed by many artists to be used in creative projects by visitors to the site“.

Unsplash is a collection of high-resolution stock images by Canada-based design agency, Crew. 10 new photographs are uploaded every 10 days.

National Gallery (London) Paintings

The National Gallery in London contains the national collection of Western European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries, with works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Renoir, Van Gogh and more. The collection can be filtered by subjects, themes, artists, styles and timeline. Subjects include Travel, Still Life & Objects, People & Costume, Land, Sea & City, Work & Leisure, Seasons & Weather, Religious & Biblical, Mythological, Plants & Animals and Historical.
