Inspired by the amount of construction going on in NTU, students from College of Science decided that they “should do something to make these workers feel welcome in the school”. Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), a non-profit organisation that advocates welfare for these workers, were contacted to find out more about what could be done. The Team found out that having a good meal or watching movies with friends are precious rarities for migrant workers.

With this in mind, planning for an appreciation event for workers from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and TWC2 started. There was an enthusiastic response, with about 80 workers and volunteers turning up for the event. It was a night of fun and laughter and the movie, “The Television”, was screened. At the end of the event, each worker was also given a welfare pack with a variety of items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, combs and tidbits.

All of us have been looking forward to this event for weeks! We can’t believe the treats we are having now!”

About The Silent Builders

The team consists of two students from College of Science. Having returned from a semester exchange in June 2014, both students noticed that there was a lot of construction going around on campus and they decided they should do something to make these workers feel welcome in the school.
