Students from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) came together one Friday afternoon with a common goal in mind – to give back to the community. Project EEE Egnite had two aims – not just an afternoon of fun for the children, but also one that inspires EEE/IEM students to become active volunteers.

With the intent of bringing joy to the children at The Salvation Army Child Care Centre (Bukit Batok East), students started preparing weeks before the actual event. For the volunteers, their experience started with being trained in the art of balloon sculpting and terrarium making. Hard at work learning how to create various balloon animals among other things, volunteers also had to figure how how to simplify instructions so that they could easily teach the children!

A crazy amount of laughter, cheers and loud applause set the tone for the actual day. EEE Egnite Chairperson turned circus juggler for the day to the delight of the young audience and this was followed by the children getting a chance to try their hand at creating their own balloon art and indoor terrariums. Recyclable containers were used and the activity provided a platform for the volunteers to share the larger picture of caring for the environment.

It may have been a simple activity to many, but for some student volunteers who were volunteering for the very first time, the afternoon brought about not just a sense of satisfaction, but a belief that everyone has the capacity to touch the lives of others.
