Organised by NTU Psychology Society and in collaboration with The New Light Foundation Community Development Centre (The New Light CDC), participants went to Baan Namkem village (which was once destroyed by a tsunami in 2004) from 5 to 14 June 2017 and taught Basic English and Mathematics to children who are in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Computer lessons and First Aid courses were also taught to the older age group, which will help to equip them with fundamental skills that may be useful in the future.

Project Arise Beyond 2017 encompassed two core principles:

  • The first inspiration springs up from the quote “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (i.e. what can a team of Singaporean students offer to neighbouring communities who may not be as privileged).
  • Secondly, its purpose is in line with the saying “he who refreshes others, is refreshed himself” (i.e. participants would be provided with opportunities to arise and go beyond their comfort zones, and thus helping them to experience personal growth).

This is the second year that NTU Psychology Society has worked with The New Light CDC, and it has allowed the team to build more trust and rapport with both their students and staff. Plans are also underway to continue the fruitful partnership for future collaborations – enabling the team to take on bigger projects and create more social impact in the community.

“The most important part of ‘giving’ is not how much we give, but how much love and compassion we put into giving.” Koh Yan Yu, a participant of Project Arise Beyond 2017

About NTU Psychology Society (NTUPSYSOC)

NTUPSYSOC strives to create an educated awareness of, and to foster a greater interest in, the field of Psychology to the masses in NTU and beyond. They also hope to establish the recognition and credibility of the NTU Psychology Society in Singapore by being an active member in the local Psychology scene.

NTUPSYSOC believes that the able should step up to lend a helping hand to those who are less privileged. Hence, the NTU Psychology Society Overseas Exposure Programme was created in 2014 with the vision to expand and create experiences of a lifetime NTU Students.

The aim of this programme is to give NTU Students opportunities to ARISE and go BEYOND their comfort zones. Believing that it is a blessing to give, NTUPSYSOC hopes to ignite a generation of undergraduates to find the joy in serving others with all they have and what they can in a self-discovery journey where they develop and experience true leadership.
