Folk Fare: The Singaporean Family Dining Experience
Folk Fare explores the concept of commensality among Singaporeans by studying the shared family meals of four Singaporean households. The result is a visual narrative that reveals the dynamics of each family. This project aims to encourage young Singaporeans who are experiencing difficulties in striking a balance between their busy lifestyle and family time to reconsider their priorities.
When was the last time you had a meal with your family?
Commensality, or eating together is said to have the ability to connect people and build relationships. In East Asian cultures, particularly Confucius heritage nations, a commitment to return home for shared family meals is a practice of filial piety and considered a virtue of respect for one’s parents. Busy lifestyles fuelled by an increasing number of dining options with alternative social circles, the shared Singaporean family meals has been in decline over the years suggesting a loosening of family ties.
