Four Seasons

Abstract or Summary of Project

‘Four Seasons’ is a series of four lamps in modern design infused with Traditional Chinese Art – Chinese Painting, Calligraphy & Seal-Carving. Traditional Chinese Art is slowly losing contact in modern world. Being Chinese, I am concerned that this traditional art form might gradually fade away in future and I would like to promote it through my products, combining modern design and Traditional Chinese Art together. My project also aims to promote the beauty of handcrafting, which is also appearing less in modern society.

In my project, ‘Four Seasons’ represents impermanence of life. Spring to Winter is like the beginning to end of life. This concept is represented through the form of the lamps, which are abstract bird forms, from birth to death. Bird is chosen as the form of the lamps as bird in my project represents ‘Bird’ under ‘Flower & Bird’ category in Chinese Painting. The four lamps follow the life of a bird, from its birth to death.

For the decorative elements on the lamps, Chinese Painting in traditional ink and wash freehand style, Calligraphy in running script style and Seal-Carvings in ‘Zhuan’ font are used, with the focus on Painting. The Chinese Paintings on the lamps are the ‘Four Gentlemen Plants’ which are under ‘Flower’ in ‘Flower & Bird’ category in Chinese Painting, representing the four seasons. The Seal-Carvings are also words of the plants. The Chinese Calligraphy are words of the seasons.
