In the mountainous region of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, the indigenous people known as the Torajas, life revolves around Death. For them a funeral is a great celebration of Life. Although they are Christians, they have kept their way of their ancestors. The funeral ceremony begins when relatives and villagers attend a buffalo slaughtering ceremony. Family members are required to slaughter buffaloes as they believe that the spirit of the deceased will live peacefully thereafter, continuing to herd the buffaloes that have come to join him.

After the sacrifice, the meat is distributed accordance with the        relatives’ positions in the community. The buffalo horns are placed in front of the house of the kin. The more horns that decorates the front of the house, the higher the status of the deceased.
