Dhammayazika

Dhammayazika is a pentagonal stupa which dates to the 12th century. The date of 1197-1198 for the temple is derived from a broken stone inscription, now in the hall on the east side. The stupa sits on successive terraces, which contain green glazed plaques depicting scenes from the Jataka tales. These plaques decorated each terrace, ranging from the base terrace to the upper stories. The five temples containing five Buddha images are linked to the stupa via a brick attachment, which might have functioned as stairways leading from the rears of these five temples to the first terrace of the stupa. Pentagonal stupas are unique to Bagan and Burma; none has been known from other parts of the world. The interiors of the five temples contain traces of murals which comprise largely floral and other decorative motifs.
