Team Questions Session (18th March)

4. The concerns of acid rain vary across the globe. Many countries in North America and Europe have websites dealing with acid rain. Either search to locate one(“Canada, acid rain”) or use these links to website in Canada , the UK or Europe. What are the issues in the country you selected? Does the acid rain deposition originate outside the borders of the country?

Eastern Canada

  • Acid rain affects lakes, forest, soils and wildlife populations and buildings
  • Many of the waters and soil lack natural alkalinity and hence, cannot neutralize acid naturally
  • Most of Canada landscape consist of hard rock and cannot neutralize the effects of acid rain

qns1:  Most of the heat is radiated off the earth as infrared radiation. As the molecules of air in the atmosphere absorbs infrared radiation the heat energy is retained in the atmosphere. As such the heat is not released into space and hence the earth is not cooling down rapidly. This effect whereby the atmosphere is retaining the heat that is radiated by the earth is called the greenhouse effect. The molecules in the air acts as the “windows” in the greenhouse and it traps the heat inside.

qns 2:No, it is not justified to say that the winter has lowered the concerns about global warming. Since the winter precipitation would be more intense because of global warming. There is a direct relationship between the surface warmth of the ocean and the amount of moisture in the air.  What that means is that this storm will be feeding off these warm seas, producing large amounts of snow as spiraling winds of the storm squeeze that moisture out of the air, cool, it, and deposit it as snow inland. Overall, it’s warming, but we still have cold winter weather. The seasons we experience are a result of the Earth’s tilted axis as it revolves around the sun. During winter, our hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and its light hits us at a different angle, making temperatures lower. While climate change won’t have any impact on Earth’s tilt. Therefore it is not justified to say that the winter has lowered the concerns about global warming.

qn3: Single H2O molecules have a sharp resonant frequency. To maintain this sharp resonance, water molecules should not be bound to other neighbouring water molecules. If this happens, it will increase the absorption-frequency band. Hence, liquid water will end up absorbing all the microwaves and this will disrupt the detection of the targeted objects which was the reason why the microwave radar was unsuccessful.

Qn4: We believe that air quality(unit 1) possesses the most serious problem in the short run while global warming(unit 3) possesses the most problem in the long run. Air pollution has immediate effects on the air quality. Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of health conditions including respiratory infections and heart disease. Global warming however is caused by an accumulation of greenhouse gases which causes Earth’s temperature to gradually increase over several decades. This increase in temperature can change the Earth’s natural climate in the long run which can cause extreme events to occur. Some examples include more frequent droughts and floods which adversely affects human lives.
