Introduction

Hey all! So this will be our very first page for our blog! We will be giving you a brief introduction on the topics that we will be touching on in our very own blog.:)

Fossil Fuel
Fossil fuel is a general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials. Prolong exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth’s crust leads to conversion of decayed plants and animals to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils. Different organisms decay to form different kinds of fossil fuels.[1]

Fossil fuels are one of today’s main sources of energy. They are used to fuel cars, planes, power electricity plants, heat homes and many other essential daily activities.  Our group seeks to discuss the chemistry behind the origin and usage of fossil fuels.

At the same time, this finite resource also has a significant impact on our environment. The continuous conversion of fossil fuels into energy for humans’ consumption has been bringing about harmful effects to the environment, ecological system and also humans’ health.

In the pages to come, we will be discussing these following topics as follow:
1. Chemical concept
i. Different types of fossil fuels
ii. Chemical reactions involving fossil fuels

2. Implications to society
i. Acid rain
ii. Effects of carbon monoxide on haemoglobin
iii. Greenhouse effect

Fun fact 2: The fossil fuels we use today began forming during the Carboniferous Period which was before dinosaurs ruled the Earth.[3]
