Cellulose
Cellulose is an organic compound consisting of repeating units of glucose, is the most abundant organic material on Earth. Cellulose can be found in plant cell walls or it is secreted by certain species of bacteria and fungi. The cellulose produced by bacteria is in the form of a film/ hydrogel, which shields the bacteria from external environment.
Historically, bacterial cellulose was used as a South-East Asian food product, Nata de coco. With the advancements in technology, bacterial cellulose finds its application in textiles, speaker membranes, food packaging containers, cosmetics and medical applications such as wound dressings.
