WK 3 – Materials Exploration: Fabric of thread; Fusing plastics

WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE?

One of the techniques I learnt today was the Fabric of thread and fusing of plastics. Both technique was demonstrated in class. Using of the sewing machine was taught in class as well. From the way of putting threading the needle, to sewing different kind of stitches.

WHAT ARE THE RELEVANT MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE TECHNIQUE?

The relevant materials needed are thread, strings, water soluble sheet and sewing machine for the fabric of thread technique. And different kind of plastics like plastic bags, fruit wrap, straws, baking paper (for when ironing to prevent plastic from sticking on iron) and iron.

In order to do the fabric of thread technique, first, lay a sheet of water soluble on the table, proceed to lay different form of threads, strings, etc onto the sheet. After laying down the things you want, proceed to put another layer of water soluble sheet onto the design. Insert pins to prevent it from shifting when sewing. Using the sewing machine, proceed to sew in a cross hatch method. As close as possible, so as to make sure the threads do not shift when you soak the sheet into the water. After removing the sheet from water, proceed to put it on an object (acting as a mold) and leave it to dry. Another method is the fusing of plastics. First, plan the different plastics you want to fuse by cutting them up and overlaying them as to how you want. When fusing, lay a layer of baking paper onto the ironing board, followed by the plastics you wan to fuse. Lay another layer of baking paper, and proceed to iron.

WHAT ARE THE USES AND APPLICATIONS OF THE TECHNIQUE?

The uses and applications for this the fabric of thread technique can be used to make a coaster, vase or a decoration piece. For the plastic fusing, you can not only up-cycle, it is also waterproof. And it is quite durable as well. And because it is waterproof, you can make a raincoat, unbrella etc. Basically, anything can be made from both of these techniques.

OWN PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

I thought these two techniques are very interesting and it can be addictive. It makes me think that I can make anything, since the materials are easily obtained and cheap. I might want to start making tote/sling bags during the holidays.
