Reflections

I learnt a lot during this course of DR2007. There were times when I was overwhelmed and had no idea how to continue and progress on. However, at the end I ended up knowing what I want and finally did as best as I could. Despite all the stress, I really feel the course is worth it. Grateful for the opportunity. 🙂

Reflections

It has an interesting texture and it should be a good media if one knows what they want. Have never really tried to create it before, but it seems really useful to create many thing as the texture is soft and it has sweet scent as well. The only cons might be the expensive price it has.

12 ~ Resin

 Technique

Resin. It is encapsulating different object in clear chemical that will harden in the shape of the mould.

Material(s)

  • Resin
  • Objects (to encapsulate)

Tool(s)

  • Mould (heat-resistant)
  • Weighing scale
  • Mask
  • Gloves

Process

  1. Wipe and/or air gun the mould to remove dust
  2. Spray conditioner onto the mould
  3. Pour the resin liquid and hardener in a ratio of 100 to 4
  4. Stir the mixture evenly
  5. Pour into the mould before it dries
  6. (optional) Place the object to encapsulate into the mould

It is an interesting but quite poisonous process (thus the mask and gloves). It results in pretty products that will be different from one another. The greatest challenge is to quickly arrange the object before the resin dries out and not to move it to much so as to keep the result as clear as possible.

11 ~ Field Trip: STPI

On 1 November 2018, we went for a field trip to STPI at 41 Robertson Quay Singapore 238236. Our tour guide was Christina, she was someone who focuses in modern & contemporary art and owns a graphic design company.

About STPI, STPI is a dynamic creative workshop and contemporary art gallery based in Singapore. Established in 2002, STPI is a not-for-profit organisation committed to promoting artistic experimentation in the mediums of print and paper and has become one of the most cutting-edge destinations for contemporary art in Asia. STPI sits alongside National Gallery Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum as part of the national Visual Arts Cluster of leading institutions in the region. (taken from its website)

The artwork in the gallery when we visit was Fragments from a Collective Unity (2018) by Aaron Curry. Los Angeles-based artist Aaron Curry’s practice oscillates between the mediums of painting and sculpture. Constantly incorporating qualities of one medium into the other, his works challenge the divisions that isolate one medium from another to reveal a richness in the middle ground. His signature totemic sculptures resemble sculptural collages of flat, organically cut shapes. They possess a distinctive 2-dimensional quality and reference a wide range of artistic styles; from the bright colours of Pop and the distorted planes of Cubism, to the biomorphism of Surrealism, they display a bold and intensely saturated visual language that is distinctively his own. (description taken from website)

Christina told us that how his childhood and surrounding have become his inspiration and influence in his artworks. Such as BMX, music that he likes and guitar. She also told us a story of how Aaron, who was a painter became who he is now. Aaron went to a local museum in Los Angeles where he met his first Picasso that has both 2D and 3D elements at once. He has since made his artwork between 2D and 3D, combining both painting and sculpting.

In the series, his signature was seen from bones and body parts, mix of 2D and 3D with inspiration from biomorphic form, BMX, The Kinks (favourite band he grew up listening to — which its album covers influenced his artworks), 2001 film Odyssey and many other from his life.

In making the artwork itself there are six steps which are:

  1. Sketch & digitise
  2. Make stencil (on plywood)
  3. Laser stencil (carved into shape) on 2 type of material
  4. Cover with paper pulp use natural glue from nori
  5. Spray the print
  6. Silk screen the print

She also mentioned that every piece is original and there is only one copy. An interesting fact also that Aaron sells out his pattern for fashion show and it can be seen in the Instagram account @rochambeau

In addition, we were privileged to be given a tour to the workshop of STPI where there are many area to support and process the creation of artworks.

  • Elephant press – history was made
  • Stone grinding station
  • Lithography station
  • Paper mill sterile area
  • Silkscreen area
  • Inspiration wall
  • Paper storage
  • Wood workshop
Exhibit inspired by BMX and his neon colour.
Exhibit inspired by when his wife got kidney transplant, he was traumatized and thus obsessed with body part, it has become a nightmare in his neon colour
Exhibit inspired by The Kinks and Odyssey
Exhibit in black and white, to focus on shape not colour, by minimising the colour that is going on.

Room about the process of artwork creation.

Merchandise and Aaron Curry Book.
My favourite piece. It looks like a rocket to me. On black and white, it is as if simply telling me: “Remember your childhood dream somewhere in the corner?”.

Reflections

It was an inspirational trip. It has made me wonder what influenced me… what do I want to do in life and what makes me persevere. I think to find a style of our own is something that an artist should look for. I hope to search for it during the holiday and hopefully through more exploration I will be able to find m style soon.

10 ~ Knitting

Technique

Knitting. It is making pattern out of yarn with the help of knitting needles.

Material(s)

  • Yarn

Tool(s)

  • Knitting needles

Process

  1. Open tutorial video for guide
  2. Follow and knit

—Photos

My sample

Reflections

It is a long process and it took me about 7 hours to get into the size of the sample. However, I have to admit it is therapeutic… but only if made without deadline/for leisure. I will try more knitting in the future as it creates interesting form and shape with simple materials.

9 ~ Fiber Etching

Technique

Fiber Etching. It is removing parts of velvet to create pattern with transparent-like effect.

Material(s)

  • Velvet (mixture of protein- and cellulose-based materials)
  • Fiber remover liquid

Tool(s)

  • Screen print stencil OR brush
  • Iron

Process

  1. Steam-iron the back of the velvet
  2. Place the screen print stencil on top of the velvet
  3. Pour fiber remover liquid onto the edge of the silk screen frame
  4. Sweep over the screen until the etching liquid is evenly distributed onto the velvet
  5. Leave the velvet to dry for 24 hours as the liquid will burn the cellulose
  6. Iron the velvet to remove the burnt fibres
  7. Wash to stop the process

Reflections

It was an expensive material to begin with, but the result was worth it. I have no idea why my velvet become ‘fried’ and it the burnt and brown left over was not removed even after several washings. I though of bleaching it but it would be bad if the velvet will create holes, so I left it the way it was.

9 ~ Bleaching

Technique

Bleaching. It is using bleach to remove the layer of colour in dark-coloured fabric.

Material(s)

  • Cotton fabric
  • Bleach

Tool(s)

  • Spray bottle OR brush
  • Pattern stencil (optional)

Process

  1. Fold/twist/manipulate the fabric into desired shape OR place a stencil onto the fabric
  2. Spray the fabric with bleach
  3. Wait until the wanted result is achieved
  4. Wash the fabric to stop the bleaching process

Reflections

It is a simple way, yet need to be careful when the bleach touch hands/clothes directly. The base colour of dark-coloured fabric can be different even though the dark looks the same. Sometimes, it might be necessary to just wait a bit longer and wait for the bleach to spread more but if gradient effect wanted, it might required quite fast to wash and stop the process. It is a fun method where trial and error can result in unusual design.

8 ~ Thermochromic Ink

Technique

Thermochromic ink. Screen printing ink that will disappear in high temperature.

Material(s)

  • Thermochromic ink
  • Acrylic paint (optional)
  • Fabric

Tool(s)

  • Silk screen frame

Process

  1. Mix 5 spoons of base and 1 spoon of thermochromic powder
  2. Add acrylic paint if the base wanted to have another colour
  3. Pour the mixture to the edge of the silk screen frame
  4. Place the frame over the fabric
  5. Sweep the mixture over a few times until it is evenly spread out
  6. Let it dry

Reflections

It is an interesting ink. When I first ironed the fabric, I was surprised that the it was gone and waited quite long for its colour to returned. While pressing it for a bit will make it lightened as well. I think this method can be one that involve interaction and response for the user of the product.  🙂

7 ~ Field Trip: The Magic Touch

On 29 September 2018, we went for a field trip to Touch & Print at Waterloo Centre #03-25.

It was my first trip to a printing company. Touch & Print offers wide range of printing services and other kind of case-by-case project as well. Firstly, we learnt about the basic theory such as colour theory (CMYK vs RGG, pantone colours) and theory of printing (laser, inkjet and offset printing). After that, the sharer proceed on demonstrating to us some heat transfer process. The sharer was also a very generous man and he also shared to us https://www.themagictouch.com.sg where we can watch the tutorial on the different technique of printing.

It was an eye-opening experience and what I amazed me the most is the different possibilities that printing process (especially heat transfer) offer. Moreover, the real industry show that we need to be flexible and cater to the different demand and projects. From the projects samples done by Touch & Print i realised that there are a lot of opportunity in printing, more than merely for shirt or posters.

6 ~ Fabric Manipulation

Technique

Fabric manipulation. It is manipulating fabric (e.g. felt) by sewing to create some pattern.

Material(s)

  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Elastic sewing thread

Tool(s)

  • Sewing needle
  • Sewing machine

Process

Smocking

  1. Prepare the fabric and needle
  2. Make grids on the back side of the fabric
  3. Follow a guide (or trial and error) and mark the sewing direction with arrow
  4. Sew

Shirring

  1. Cut out the pieces of fabric into desired shapes and sizes
  2. Arrange them on the base fabric
  3. Pin to keep them in place
  4. Sew with the sewing machine in the desired type of stitch

It is an interesting method. Unless used to it, drawing the arrow really helps as once sewn, it is quite hard to see. It is quite time consuming but the result creates some satisfaction, should try more pattern next time 🙂
