The reason why I chose flowers as my theme was because i wanted a theme that comprises a lot of colours and have a lot of variation and variety that allows me to explore using the different methods. I found that flower fit in perfectly with what i wanted. The vibrant colours paired together with details that leave people in awe. I wanted to achieve that in my final product using the advantages of the different materials.
Techniques used:
- Smocking
- Wet Felting
- Needle Felting
- Knitting ( Paper yarn)
- Plastic Fusing
KNITTING
I wanted to create a different texture for the sunflower as I did not want all my flowers to be of a soft texture hence i chose to knit with paper yarn which has a harder texture and structure.
SMOCKING
I feel like the shape of circular smocking already sort of resembles a flower hence i choose to go with this method paired along with an iridescent fabrics to give it some sort of oomph.
PLASTIC FUSING
I tried out a different way of plastic fusing. I use the heat from a hair straightener to crimp the plastic to create this crumpled texture of the flower which I found really interesting. Unfortunately, this effect only works on very thin layers of plastic and I was not able to get the solid vibrant colour of flowers that I wanted to achieve.
WET FELTING
Wet felting allows me to mash up different colours of wool and create this marble effect which i really like.
NEEDLE FELTING
This method of felting gave me a lot of control in terms of the detailing which I really wanted to achieve for my final product and i was able to control how dense and solid I wanted the flower to be.
