What is the technique?

Applique is a sewing technique that involves stitching pieces of fabric onto other fabric bases to make a pattern or design. The stitching of applique pieces can be done by hand as well as by sewing machine.

 

What are the materials needed?

• Fabrics
• Sewing machine
• Sewing threads

 

How to achieve the technique?

1. Prepare the fabrics and the desired designs

2. Pin the fabrics together to avoid misalignment

3. Set-up the sewing machine to the desired settings

4. Start sewing!

 

What are the uses and applications of the technique?

• Wearable items (jewellery, apparels, etc.)
• Cushion cover
• Table runners

Own personal reflections

This technique has taught me the basics of using the sewing machine. It taught me that practice makes perfect stitching and I enjoyed the process of the mix and match of fabrics to go over one another and creating motifs etc.

Applique became one of my favourite techniques and I considered using this technique for the final project.
