What is the technique?
Thermochromic inks can change from colourless to colourful or colourful to colourless very quickly. Although thermochromic inks were introduced in the 1970s, they are used extensively today.
What are the materials needed?
- Thermochromic pigment
- Fabric paint
- Screen print stencil
- Squeegee
- Fabric (light coloured)
- Face mask
- Spoon
How to achieve the technique?
- Mask on when handling with the powder
- Scoop 5 spoons of the thermochromic base into a cup
- Scoop the coloured powder into the cup
4. Mix them well
5. Lay out fabric on the table, the screen print stencil on top of the fabric
6. Scoop and place the mixture at the top of the stencil
7. With the squeegee, angled, drag the mixture from the top to the base of the stencil
8. Lift the stencil
9. Pattern can be seen on the fabric

- Wearable items (scarf, apparels, etc.)
- Cushion cover
- Table runners
- Ceramic mug surface

Own personal reflections
It was my first time experiencing this technique and it was a fun process to play with the mixing of colours. The stencil that was used during class had patterns where it is beautifully designed in itself.
If I were to consider using this technique for my final project, I would want to design the stencil pattern which goes with the concept of my project.
