What is the technique?
Fiber Etch on fabrics is a technique more commonly known as Devore.
Devore (also called burnout) is a fabric technique particularly used on velvets, where a mixed-fibre material undergoes a chemical process to dissolve the cellulose fibers to create a semi-transparent pattern against more solidly woven fabric.
Fiber Etch removes plant fibers: cotton, linen, ramie, rayon and paper. It is also very effective on fabric blends.
What are the materials needed?
- Fiber Etch Fiber Remover
- Screen Printing Stencil
- Squeegee
- Fabric
Types of Fabrics:
- Silk viscose velvet
- Silk viscose satin
- Polyester cotton azeta (Poly-cotton)
- Polyester cotton jersey (Poly-cotton)
How to achieve the technique?
- Iron fabric (velvet surface face down)
2. Lay out fabric before the stencil
3. Pour the fiber remover gel at top of the stencil
4. Screen print pattern
5. Dry thoroughly for 24hours (or hairdryer)
6. Iron till fibers are removed and turns brownish-burnt
7. Wash in warm water
8. Dye the fabric
What are the uses and applications of the technique?
- Wearable item (fashionwear, etc.)
- Cushion cover
- Curtains

Own personal reflections
I think this technique becomes tedious when wrong kind of fabric was used. We couldn’t get the correct velvet that would enable the pattern to be seen as much.
