People who have visual impairments face difficulty in flagging down buses.

Current experiences

  • People with visual impairments are advised to wait at the front of bus stops
  • If there are other passengers around, they can ask them about the approaching buses.
  • If there are no other passengers around, people with visual impairments will flag if they hear a bus coming. And after the bus stops, they will ask the driver what bus it is

Other measures

  • Guide dogs
  • Braille bus guide
  • Bus arrival time apps
  • Assistance from bus captains
  • Public transportation training for visually impaired individuals

Main concern to address: Difficulty in flagging down buses when there is no one/less commuters around

  •  Some buses would travel too fast and the individual is unable to flag down the bus in time
  • Solution: Wearable token with
    • A lanyard attachment to carry it around
    • A braille keypad for the visually impaired to key in the bus stop numbers
    • Vibration to signal to the user when their bus is reaching their stop
