A scientific research paper was found which explained step by step the procedure of making a DIY spectrophotometer with easily available material.

Multifunctional webcam spectrophotometer for performing analytical determination and measurements of emission, absorption, and fluorescence spectra. This paved the way for Spectrophotometer V2 which consisted of a webcam and a diffraction grating as stated in the paper.
(Image showing our arrangement)
Advantages:
- Small form factor
- Easy to adjust and design
- Research paper had trusted results hence could be followed to achieve required results
( Above image shows our first test from the webcam, showing the results on theremino on the top and showing what the camera sees on the bottom)
Problems faced:
- Light intensity is significantly reduced by slits
- Theremino is quite unwieldy
- Alignment of sensor and light source is difficult and needs to be done regularly
